The most comprehensive set of mechanical specifications for RF/microwave connectors is MIL-STD-348B:DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE INTERFACE STANDARD. It contains the reference dimensions for RF connectors meeting US military specifications. Also, this standard specifies the dimensional requirements for radio frequency connector interfaces referenced in MIL-DTL-3643, MIL-DTL-3650, MIL-STD-3655, MIL-DTL-25516, MIL-PRF-31031, MIL-PRF-39012, MIL-PRF-49142, MIL-PRF-55339 and MIL-DTL-83517.
For almost all non-military applications designated as “microwave” (as opposed to “RF” or “general purpose”) a connector based on MIL specifications is the best choice. These connectors will provide consistent electrical performance and mechanical reliability. Using a common specification also assures uniform performance among products from different vendors.
RF/microwave engineers will be familiar with electrical specifications such as VSWR, power handling and voltage breakdown. However, MIL-STD-348B also provides a look at additional requirements for manufacturing tolerances and selection of materials for connector bodies and mating contacts.
