Revolutionizing Energy Efficiency: 5 Holistic Approaches in Our Workplace II
Solution C: Incorporating Motion Sensors and Timers
Did you know that motion sensors were first invented by Samuel Bango in 1950? This revolutionary technology has since found application in diverse fields, including energy-saving lighting. By automatically turning lights on and off when individuals enter and leave an area, motion sensors minimize unnecessary energy consumption. Notably, if no movement is detected after a preset period of time, typically ranging from a few seconds to several minutes, the motion sensor will signal the lights to turn off, resulting in substantial energy savings. By utilizing motion sensors to control lighting, businesses can achieve significant reductions in energy consumption, ranging from 30% to 90%.

By installing motion sensors for lights in hallways and parking lots, we ensure that lights are only on when they are needed, and not wasting energy when the areas are not in use. Similarly, using timers for water dispensers, office multifunctional copiers and appliances that are not required to be on all the time helps us avoid wasting energy during periods of low demand, such as off-office hours, holidays and weekends. These small yet significant changes have already shown promising results, with significant reductions in our consumption and associated costs.
Solution D: Transitioning to Paperless Processes
Implementing paperless process is another effective approach we have taken towards enhancing energy efficiency. Across our production processes, we have implemented QR code scanning systems and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to replace traditional paperwork, resulting in significant reductions in paper usage. Additionally, we have incorporated e-surveys in our HR department to replace traditional paper forms. By adopting these paperless technologies, we have not only reduced our overall environmental impact, but also increased efficiency and productivity across our operations.

Through the use of QR codes, we have been able to streamline our production process, reducing time and resources needed to manage physical paperwork. ERP systems have also been highly effective in streamlining inventory management, reducing the need for manual data entry and documentation. Our HR department has also benefited from the incorporation of e-surveys, which has made the process of gathering and managing applicant info and employee feedback much more efficient.
Solution E: Utilizing Environmentally-Friendly Office Supplies
However, there are still some processes that require physical paperwork. For these situations where electronic options are not available, we have chosen to use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper for printing. FSC is a leading certification system for responsibly managed forests and sustainable paper production. By using FSC certified printing paper, we can ensure that the paper we use is sourced from forests that are managed to high environmental and social standards. These standards include protecting biodiversity and the rights of workers and local communities. Overall, FSC certified paper has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional paper.
