Electronic Engineering: Board to Board Connectors

Chin Nan has released a new line of board-to-board connectors in 5 series, including SMP, SMT, SMPM, RPSMP and mini-coax.   The frequency operates from DC to 65 GHz and features ultra small size for high density interface, high power and high performance. These connectors provide flexibility for board-to board and board-to-module designs.


In this article, Chin Nan specifically introduces SMP, SMPM and RPSMP by comparing their features and performance to support our customers choose the most applicable connectors their designs.

Core Features of Board-to-Board Connectors

Chin Nan's board to board connectors work with misalignment in radial and axial directions and maintain the best performance at the same time. The feature of self-aligning axial and radial misalignment is especially suitable for blind mating interface.


The range of 2 pieces and 3 pieces configuration connection are available for different interface requirements.  The minimum low profile connector height is 4.0 mm which is achieved by using SMT connectors. The highest density of contact pitch is 2.0 mm, which is reached by using mini-coax connectors. 


Two mating styles: Push-on and Snap-on coupling. Both are available for efficient installation and easy to use in limited spaces.

For 3 piece connection board-to-board design, the male connector is used on each of PC board and the female adapter which is often called "bullet" is mated in between for the connection. Female adapter can be designed in different length for different board spacing.

Male connector has three types of designs based on the respective level of its engagement and disengagement forces: limited detent, full detent and smooth bore. We use limited detent plugs for which the mechanical requirements is from low to medium, it is usually applied to the telecommunication, test or measurement device, and so on.


The full-detent plugs which can tightly hold the female adapter have better performance in vibration resistant so it can be used in the situation that the mechanical strength highly required, such as aerospace applications.  We use the smooth bore plugs under the situation that space or blind mating is specially needed.

SMP: The Versatile High-Frequency Interconnect Solution

  • Frequency operation up to 40 GHz
  • Semi-rigid cable: DC to 18 GHz, Adapter: 40 GHz
  • V.S.W.R : 1.3 MAX.@18 GHz (straight), 1.5 MAX.@18 GHz (right angle)
  • Subminiature interface, ideal for the smaller, smart device.
  • A wide range of applications such as wireless, military or test equipment, etc.

SMPM: Pushing the Limits of High-Density Performance

  • Frequency operation up to 65 GHz.
  • V.S.W.R: 1.2 MAX. @ 26.5 GHz, 1.5 MAX. @ 65 GHz (Uncabled receptacle)
  • V.S.W.R: 1.15 MAX. @ 18 GHz, 1.25 MAX. @ 40 GHz, 1.5 MAX. @ 65 GHz (bullet)
  • Micro subminiature interface, smaller than SMP, space-saving.
  • Ideally used for high density, high performance applications, such as aerospace and high-speed semiconductor test, etc.

RPSMP: The Optimal Choice for High Power and Stability

  • Frequency operation up to 10 GHz.
  • V.S.W.R: 1.2 MAX. @ 1 GHz
  • Power handling up to 335 W.
  • Same footprint of SMP, easy for conversion.
  • Designed for board to board applications by utilizing the advantages of high power rating of SMA and high density of SMP.
  • Ideally used for board-to-board connections in base stations, or board-to-cable connections in power amplifier filter units, etc.
